在开采可燃冰的过程中，会分解大量的水，这些水会稀释岩层空间，使得地层结构稳定性变差，容易引发地质灾害。
在海洋环境中，无论是减压分解还是激热分解，都会导致海底陆坡区的稳定性下降，严重则会发生海底坍塌，如毁坏海底输电或通信电缆和海洋石油钻井平台等设施。
